EKG Training

The EKG Technician Program combines theory and practice, giving each student an understanding of:

  • The anatomy and physiology of the heart and chest
  • Heart disease and disease processes
  • Flow of blood through systemic and pulmonary circulation
  • The conduction system
  • Pertinent medical terminology, and
  • The legal and ethical aspects of patient contact and safety

There is also practical, hands-on experience that participants receive through:

  • Use and placement of the 12 Lead EKG machine
  • Reading and analyzing EKG printouts to determine ‘cardiac intervals and complexes,’ and
  • Normal vs. abnormal readings

EKG technicians monitor the readings, make sure the machine is attached properly and in working order, and records the results of the EKG tests. In addition, EKG techs might take a patient's medical history, ask questions, keep equipment in good working order, check the quality of recorded data, and help technologists and physicians during procedures.

Employment of diagnostic medical sonographers and cardiovascular technologists and technicians, including vascular technologists is projected to grow 39 percent from 2012 to 2022, much faster than the average for all occupations.
